Sarcoidosis

Sarcoidosis is a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown cause which preferentially targets the lymph nodes and lungs. 

However, it can affect other organs in 30 to 50% of cases: heart, eyes, nervous system, skin, etc.

It is generally mild, with spontaneous patient recovery, in 8 out of 10 cases.

It is, nonetheless, very important to detect more severe cases which can lead to serious or, indeed, irreversible lesions if left untreated.

Particular attention should this be paid to the symptoms described below.

 

Symptoms

They vary according to the affected organs:

  • pulmonary symptoms: cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, etc.
  • significant fatigue
  • unexplained fever
  • weight loss with lack of appetite
  • muscle or joint pain
  • skin lesions
  • visual disturbances

Diagnosis

The disease is diagnosed by means of a biopsy usually taken from the lungs.

However, samples may be taken from other tissues, depending on the affected organs: lymph node, skin, kidney or liver, etc.

 

Assessment

Once the disease is confirmed, several tests need to be performed in order to assess the potentially affected organs and disease severity.

This assessment relies on the expertise of different specialists owing to the systemic nature of sarcoidosis.

 

Treatment

Treatment depends on the type and severity of symptoms, and is routinely prescribed for eye, cardiac or neurological lesions.

In other cases, the benefits and risks related to treatment should always be clearly assessed, so as to choose the best solution for the patient.
