Hospital Hygiene

Preventing infections at CHIREC

Infections are a complication that can arise during patient care, especially in those with an impaired state of health. It is therefore of utmost importance to do everthing possible to prevent infections from occurring.

For many years now, Chirec has had a voluntary policy in place to prevent and tackle healthcare-related infections.

Prevention and management of infection

The multidisciplinary hospital hygiene team set up by the company management has developed a strategic plan for the prevention and management of infection.

This is a patient-centric policy.

A CHIREC hospital hygiene committee meeting is held every three months in order to prioritise which measures should be taken and to develop an action plan across all Chirec sites.

To put these different plans into practice, the hospital hygiene unit works in close collaboration with the heads of medicine and nursing. Nurses and doctors take part in continuous training in the form of conferences, symposiums and seminars.

In a pratical sense

The operational teams made up of nurses and doctors are present on every hospital sites.

These teams provide expertise, advice and information to actors both within and outside the hospital:

  • They train caregivers and nurses in the best practices in hospital hygiene.
  • They write recommendations based on up-to-date data from the literature and the Belgian Superior Health Council. In cooperation with the committee, the teams organise regular audits to make sure that healthcare staff observe best practices.

In parallel to this work on the ground, medical doctors and nurses answer epidemiology surveys (monitoring multi-drug resistant bacteria, septicaemia, etc.) and take part in national campaigns, such as hand hygiene intiatives organised by Sciensano.
