Pain Clinic - Delta Hospital
This multidisciplinary centre offers a multimodal evaluation, according to the biopsychosocial model, including emerging research such as nutrition and acupuncture with a view to integrative pain medicine.
General physiology and the metabolism of the medication are therefore evaluated in a specific way, which makes it possible to implement tailored therapeutic strategies.
Anaesthesia, neuromodulation and radiofrequency procedures are combined with optimsed management of various medication-based and non-medication-based strategies.
How it works
During the first consultation to decide on the direction to take, the diagnostic hypothesis is subject to a specific anamnesis:
- diagnostic considerations
- evaluation of the strategies already carried out and questions about partial efficacy or inefficacy.
- evaluation of the various different elements of pain that affect how chronic it becomes, according to the biopsychosocial model.
The second consultation, based on the initial anamnesis, can take place 15 days later.
Follow-up is then carried-out monthly for 4 to 5 months, after which the evolution will be assessed in terms of the intensity of the pain.
Therapeutic projects will take place in collaboration with specialists:
- neurosurgeons
- neurologists
- physical medicine doctors
- rheumatologists
These specialists may intervene sporadically, either for a specialist opinion, or for specific therapeutic management.
Clinical research
Clinical research, in collaboration with various universities, holds an important place at the Park Leopold Pain Clinic, with the aim of integrating and synthesising emerging strategies.
St-Anne St-Remi : a holistic patient approach
How it works
The approach of chronic pain is deployed on several levels:
- on the one hand, there is the use of classic techniques with radioscopy
- and on the other hand, in-depth analysis of the type and origin of the pain.
" We try to consider the patient as a whole, to precisely identify their problem, while working in collaboration with spinal surgeons. Then, if necessary, we will refer the patient to another department."
"Virtual reality" technique
The particular innovation of the approach at St-Anne St-Remi is the use of neurosciences, with virtual reality techniques.
" We place the patient in an unreal visual space via a helmet that allows them to perceive images in 3D. Isolated from reality, they can explore and travel through this new reality..."
This is a technique primarily used to manage post-traumatic stress.
Thanks to functional magnetic resonance, it is possible to trace the pain. This will also be activated when an individual recalls an episode of pain. The interesting thing about the helmet is that it can inhibit this activation.
Braine-l'Alleud - Waterloo and the Basilique Clinic: a multi-technique approach
How it works
Pain consultations at the Braine-l'Alleud - Waterloo Hospital and Basilique Clinic are mostly focused on cervical and lumbar problems.
These problems are treated via epidural injections (foraminal or facet). The evolution of techniques allows us to be more accurate and to target zones in a more meticulous way.
- Epidural injections aim to treat pain at the root of the nerve.
- Foraminal injection is based on one single and unique root, while an epidural acts on a wider area.
- Intra-facet injections are applied to the joints between vertebrae.
Purpose
The eventual objective is to form a recognised and holistic structure, involving regular consultation with all of the rheumatologists, radiologists, orthopaedists, psychiatrists, oncologists, neurologists, and other pain specialists.
"Pain is often located at a crossroads, which means that both routes have to be coordinated."
