Plastic surgery
Plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, which covers the whole of the human body, is often considered as a recent and luxurious surgery, but operations have been described dating back to Antiquity.
According to the WHO, health is a complete state of well-being that is physical as well as mental and social, and does not just consist of the absence of illnes or infirmity.
Plastic Surgery is a branch of medicine which fits that definition perfectly. It is restorative surgery, but also enables people to have a better life, to be happy.
It is intended to restore the intial appearance of a patient who has suffered harm to his/her physical integrity, but also to erase the effects of age or modify an unsightly physical detail.
Plastic surgery encompasses two fields of activity which are essentially related, carried out by the same surgeons and use similar techniques:
Multidisciplinaire approach
Many pathologies encountered in plastic surgery require a multi-disciplinary approach.
From this point of view, the plastic surgery department is involved in several Multidisciplinary Oncological Consultations (MOC) and several teams have been set up working closely with other department to provide integrated, holistic care, particularly in fields such as:
- Breast reconstruction, in collaboration with the Gynaecology, Oncology, Pathological Anatomy, Medical imaging, Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy, Genetics and supportive care (physiotherapy, psychology, ...).
- Face and Neck surgery, in collaboration with units specialising in ENT, Ophthalmology, Dentistry and Maxillo-facial surgery.
- Skin cancers (melanoma, carcinoma, ...) in collaboration with the Dermatology, Oncology, Radiotherapy and Pathological Anatomy departments.
- Wounds and scars treatment.
