Physical Medicine

Physical medicine is one of the specialties covered by the Locomotor Centre, which also brings together physiotherapy, orthopaedics and rheumatology services to provide integrated patient care. Physical medicine services are provided at all sites. This specialty consists of the diagnosis (consultations, technical medical investigations) and treatment of diseases linked to the locomotor system.

Patients treated in the physical medicine department can have 48 sessions of physiotherapy per year reimbursed by the NIHDI.

Programme and hospital stay

A personalised care programme is developed according to the illness and the objectives to be achieved.

This therapeutic project is re-evaluated by the multidisciplinary team on a weekly basis.

The length of the stay therefore depends on how the condition of your health evolves, on attaining the pre-established objectives and regaining your autonomy.

Meetings with your friends and family can be arranged by appointment, either at the family's or at the team's request.

What should you bring with you for your stay in the rehabilitation unit?

  • A list of your medicines (name, dose, posology)
  • Essential toiletries
  • Comfortable clothing, with closed-toe shoes that are easy to put on, swimwear


Physical Rehabilitation Unit - Braine-l'Alleud - Waterloo Hospital


As soon as a patient is admitted to the rehabilitation unit, a report will be compiled on their level of autonomy and their environment.

This makes it possible to set occupational therapy objectives.

The aim of hospitalisation in the rehabilitation unit is to enable patients to regain their autonomy as quickly as possible under optimum medical conditions.

The medical treatments and exercises are adapted according to necessity and needs.

Admission is always planned.

As soon as you have arrived and settled in, the nurse will meet you to find out about your lifestyle, etc.

The doctor will come by and compile a medical file.

As soon as you arrive, a member of our care team will welcome you and help you settle in to your room.

They will ask you some questions to find out about your lifestyle, your medicines, your mobility issues or any other issues.

  • Essential toiletries
  • Everyday necessities (slippers, non-slip shoes, comfortable clothing, medicines from home)

We ask you to wear civilian clothing during the day as you are no longer ill but going through a period of convalescence.
