The 10 WHO/UNICEF Recommendations for a Successful Breastfeeding
- Adopt a written breastfeeding policy and ensure it is systematically communicated to all healthcare staff.
- Provide all healthcare staff with the training and skills necessary to implement this policy.
- Inform all pregnant women about the benefits of breastfeeding and how to practice it, whether or not they are followed in the facility.
- Place newborns skin-to-skin with their mother immediately after birth for at least one hour, and encourage mothers to recognize when their baby is ready to feed, offering help if needed.
- Show mothers how to breastfeed and maintain lactation even if they are separated from their baby.
- Promote exclusive breastfeeding, giving breastfed newborns no food or drink other than breast milk, unless medically indicated.
- Keep the newborn with the mother 24/7.
- Encourage breastfeeding on demand.
- Do not give breastfed babies artificial nipples or pacifiers.
- Identify breastfeeding support groups and other appropriate resources, and refer mothers to them upon leaving the facility.
