Cardioversion

Electrical cardioversion (ECV) is a simple, effective procedure for restoring a normal heart rhythm in the event of persistent arrhythmia. It is performed under general anaesthetic in a hospital environment to ensure your comfort and safety.

  • Electrical cardioversion (ECV) is a simple way of restoring normal heart rhythm in patients with arrhythmias that persist despite optimal drug treatment.
  • An external electric shock is applied to the chest, stopping the rhythm disorder and allowing the normal rhythm to resume.
  • This procedure must be carried out in hospital with a brief general anaesthetic because of the pain caused by the shock on the skin of the chest.
  • Electrical cardioversion is effective in over 80% of cases, but it only restores the normal rhythm and does not prevent any subsequent recurrence, which is why additional medical treatment is generally necessary.
  • The examination takes place on the 3rd floor, B wing, in the endoscopy department.
  • You must register at admissions on the ground floor of the hospital.
  • Plan to stay in the hospital for half a day.
  • You must fast for at least 6 hours.
  • Medication should normally be taken with a small amount of water, if possible at a distance from the examination.
  • Prior anticoagulant treatment for 3-4 weeks is essential to avoid any risk of thrombosis.
  • Patients are not allowed to drive until the day after the examination.
  • The bill will be sent to you by the hospital.
